In addition to the religious traditions, La Antigua has family legacies that are translated into beautiful hand-made crafts, recipes that are passed down from generation to generation, as well as stories of ghosts and lost souls that are told and retold from parents and grandparents. Handicraft Traditions These crafts are the artistic expression of a town where skills are not learned through books, but rather by the examples and works created by parents and taught to children. Among these traditional handcrafts made by Antiguans and those in the surrounding areas are ceramics, candle-making, textiles, and iron works. Ceramics Antiguan potters still following this tradition are true artisans and create beautiful original pieces. There are many types of ceramics in Guatemala . They differ in the manufacturing process (materials used), as well as the drying system, firing, and decoration. In Antigua , two of these types are "Mayolica ceramics" and painted ceramics. Traditional Cuisines Guatemalan cuisine is a mixture of recipes, art, and tradition. Thus different areas of the country have their own special "flavor." Antigua is no exception. It has a myriad of choices for dining--from simple neighborhood places to luxurious restaurants. The common denominator is traditional food. We suggest that you don't miss the opportunity to try the chiles rellenos, chuchitos, tamales, tostadas, enchiladas, or rellenitos. All of these are available in neighborhood shops. For more elaborate dishes such as pepi á n , frijoles volitions, piloyes, revolcado (pork stew), you only have to peruse the menu outside of the many restaurants in town. If you are lucky enough to be in Antigua on November 1 st or 2 nd , you may be able to taste the famous fiabre, only available at that time of year. |
