Valley of Panchoy

After the destruction of Ciudad Vieja, the capital was moved to the nearby Panchoy Valley . This location had a pleasant climate, good soil, and abundant water. However, it was located close to three volcanoes- Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego. Nevertheless, on March 10, 1543, the third capital was established. The city was designed by the engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli. After the construction of various buildings, the city endoured several earthquakes. Nevertheless, the citizens were able to recover and continued building. However in 1773, a series of earthquakes in July and August totally destroyed the city.
