Valley of Almolonga
|
In 1526 conflicts with the Indigenous population forced the city to move to the valley of Almolonga (today near Ciudad Vieja). It was there in 1527 that the construction of the city was begun. Houses, churches, as well as other buildings were constructed. However, due to poor construction, the city was destroyed on September 11, 1541. Constant rains and a strong earthquake caused an eruption of mud and water from the Agua (Water) Volcano, which virtually buried the town. |
